Music Together® Online FAQ/Policies

As a parent, what is my role during an online class?

Sing, dance, and have fun! When children stare at a screen and passively receive information, they don't learn from it in the same way as when they have the active participation of a caregiver or parent. You might be surprised to hear that you are your child's most important music teacher right now—regardless of your musical ability. Young children develop dispositions for certain behaviors, including learning to love music, by observing and imitating their loved ones. Simply by participating enthusiastically during online classes and playing with the ideas at home, you'll give your children the modeling they need to learn to love to make music. Please prepare your environment ahead of time. Put away distracting toys and keep suggested props out of reach until they are needed to help create a music-only environment in your home.

What's expected of my child in an online class?

Children are never required to sit in front of the screen or expected to conform to an adult's idea of participation. We know that children learn differently from adults. They learn instinctively and constantly, through observation, interactions with adults and older children, and through imitation, play, and, especially, movement. One hallmark of Music Together is the insight that children will naturally develop music ability simply when they are immersed in a community of families all making music.

Children's responses depend on their most dominant learning style and temperament as well as their age and developmental level. Some might follow the teacher right away. Many will simply want to watch and absorb, particularly in the first few weeks of class. Some might crawl or toddle around; others are stimulated by the music and respond more actively, marching, jumping, or dancing. All are perfectly natural responses to the new, musically rich environment. The greatest musical gift you can give your child is your own participation.

How should we use the Music Together materials?

Play your songs at home frequently, especially during the first few weeks of class. Make the music available for your child to listen to while she is playing or before nap or bedtime. Create your Family Music Zone®  account and download the Hello Everybody app for digital versions of the songs including full notation for each song and more activity ideas to try!

Use the songbook to help you learn the songs and get new ideas for musical ideas to use at home. Try using the songbook at storytime instead of a regular book and sing through the songs as you go along.

What is the online class size?

Each online class via Zoom has between 6 and 12 registered children, plus their caregiver(s), and siblings.

What if I miss an online class during the semester?

You can join a different class time if you are unable to attend the one you've registered for. Please contact Ms. Katie right away if you are having any technical issues.

Can I switch to a different online class?

Families may choose to switch to another available online class time during the semester with no penalty.

What if I start classes after the semester begins?

Syke'd Music welcomes families at any point during the semester! Late registrations will be prorated as needed. Materials and licensing fees still apply.

Do you offer refunds for online classes?

Families may withdraw registration for a full refund prior to the start of the semester. If a family needs to withdraw prior to the end of the semester due to extenuating circumstances, a partial refund may be given.

Classes need a minimum of 5 registered children to run. Registered families will be notified if a class has insufficient enrollment prior to the start date. Registered families may then opt to select another class time.

What happens if an online class is canceled?

If Ms. Katie needs to cancel an online class due to illness or any other unforeseen circumstances you will be notified as quickly as possible. Please check your inbox, our website homepage, or our Facebook page for announcements regarding cancellations.

Can unregistered older siblings and other family members attend an online class?

Absolutely! Online tuition covers attendance for the whole family! If you would like to have other children's names included in the "hello" and "goodbye" songs please email Ms. Katie before class.

Why aren't there classes for specific age groups?

Classes with children of different ages have intellectual and social benefits for both younger and older children. In fact, it's the learning environment recommended by many early childhood researchers. Older children learn empathy and awareness of others, while developing leadership qualities and gaining self-confidence. Younger children learn by imitating the older ones and often show more complex behaviors earlier than usual. Even babies benefit by being in an environment that gives them lots of opportunities to observe the behavior of children of varying ages. Plus, it allows everyone—siblings, parents, grandparents, caregivers—to share in the musical experience together!

Do you offer gift certificates?

Gift certificates toward classes can be purchased at any time. They make fabulous gifts. Click here if you're interested in purchasing one.
